Fuel fraud is a significant issue for fleet managers, impacting operational costs and efficiency. From over-claiming business mileage to filling personal vehicles on company cards, these fraudulent activities can lead to substantial financial losses. Fuel fraud costs companies millions annually.
With advanced data analytics and specialized tools, fleet managers now have powerful resources to combat this problem effectively. Data-driven insights help identify anomalies, monitor fuel consumption, and detect suspicious activities, ensuring more secure and efficient fleet operations.
Several APIs can be integrated into fleet management systems to enhance security and prevent fuel card fraud.
Here’s how these APIs can be utilized:
Recent Transactions API: This API allows querying real-time transaction data from last 48 hours. Create alerts in your system based on the user behavior, monitor credit limits. This API offers detailed information, including the location of fueling, fuel type, and volume. Here's how it can help prevent fuel fraud:
Location of Fueling: Knowing where the fuel was purchased helps verify if the transaction aligns with the vehicle's route and schedule. Transactions occurring in unexpected locations can be flagged for further investigation. | Fuel Type: Monitoring the type of fuel purchased ensures that it matches the vehicle's requirements. Any discrepancies, such as purchasing premium fuel for a vehicle that doesn't require it, can indicate potential misuse. | Volume of Fuel: Keeping track of the fuel volume helps identify overfilling or multiple transactions in a short period, which could signal fraudulent activity. |
Temporary Card Block API: This API enables fleet managers to temporarily block a fuel card. If suspicious activity is detected, the card can be blocked immediately to prevent further unauthorized transactions.
Some customer use this feature and unblock drivers card, when the driver is at the station and block afterwards, allowing transactions with the card during limited period of time.
Schedule Card Block API: Similar to the temporary block, this API allows to schedule a card block. This is useful for setting predefined times when the card should not be used, such as outside of business or drivers working hours.
By connecting your HR system with this API you can trigger temporary card block when card holder goes on leave and card should not be used.
Limits and Restrictions API: This API provides the ability to set limits and restrictions on fuel cards. Managers can control how and where the cards are used, fueling amount, including setting day/time restrictions, location and product restrictions.
SmartPay API: The SmartPay API allows for the digitalization of Shell Fuel cards and secure payment for fuel directly at forecourt via mobile apps or vehicle infotainment systems. This reduces the risk of card misuse and enhances transaction security.
You will receive a notification about finalized or failed transaction in real time. Additionally, SmartPay API works with limits and restrictions, only nozzle with allowed products will be unlocked and you can predefine fueling amount.
